When life gets overwhelming with full schedules and empty stomachs, delivery can be a saving grace at the dinner table.
Today, getting food delivered is as easy as clicking a few buttons through apps like DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Instacart. But before modern delivery apps and smartphones, getting a meal delivered looked very different. The process was slower, more limited, and heavily reliant on traditional in-house restaurant staff.
There’s a certain nostalgia surrounding the old-fashioned takeout experience, the days before apps, GPS, and mobile phones that make ordering dinner nearly effortless.
Take a trip down memory lane with Nelly’s Kitchen as we revisit what the delivery experience was like in the good old days.
The Menu Stash
Ever wonder why your parents may have kept paper menus in a drawer, stuck to the refrigerator with a magnet, or stacked somewhere on the kitchen counter? This was how it was done before phones, when you needed a local restaurant and its phone number.
If you lost a menu and needed to find a restaurant’s phone number, you could turn to the infamous phone book and look it up in the Yellow Pages.
Once you got through, you had to place your entire order over the phone. Paying was a different experience. You might have had to read your credit card information aloud to the person taking your order. If you preferred not to, you would need to pay the driver in cash when your food arrived. Portable card readers weren’t part of the equation yet.
During the dinner rush, you might get a literal busy signal, forcing you to hang up and try again. If someone answers, you could still be put on hold while the restaurant handles the rush.
Pizza or Chinese? Those Are The Limits
One advantage of delivery apps is the incredible variety of restaurants or cafes at your fingertips. Craving authentic Italian food? Browse the menu, place an order, and have dinner delivered in 20 minutes.
Back then, your dining options were much more limited. Businesses offered delivery if they had enough business to afford their own delivery drivers. As a result, delivery was most commonly associated with pizza shops and Chinese takeout restaurants.
They served customers within 3 to 5 miles; if you were outside that range, you were out of luck. Keeping deliveries close to the restaurant helped drivers return quickly for the next order and reduced the chance of them getting lost in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
The Delivery Process and Mental Mapping
Ordering your food was only the beginning.
You had to read your order item by item over the phone, spell out your street name, and provide cross streets, landmarks, or other directions to help the driver find your home.
There was no live tracking and no estimated arrival time appearing on your phone. You waited and hoped your food would arrive within 30-45 minutes.
If an hour passed, your best option was to call the restaurant and ask whether the driver had left yet.
For delivery drivers, navigating to an unfamiliar address presented its own challenges. You don’t realize how fortunate we are to have GPS when we’re lost. These drivers relied on their knowledge of local streets and physical map books such as Thomas Guides.
Getting from the restaurant to your front door required a little more planning, memory, and patience than it does today.
