Sub, Grinder or Hero? The Differences of This Sub Shop Favorite.

December 15, 2023

A grinder, hero, and sub sandwich are popular sandwiches across the United States. Each of these offerings has unique characteristics that distinguish it from the others. But what are these differences, and how do you know which to order when visiting your favorite sub shop?

Here, our team at Nelly’s Kitchen digs into this American favorite. We’ll explain everything you ever wondered about the sub, grinder, and hero – and possibly a little more!

The Grinder

A grinder is a sandwich typically made with a long roll filled with meat, cheese, and vegetables. The roll is usually toasted, and the filling is piled high. Grinders are most commonly found in New England and are often referred to as subs or submarine sandwiches. As if it wasn’t confusing enough.

The term grinder is thought to have originated in the naval shipyards of Connecticut, where workers would bring their lunches in long, cylindrical containers that resembled the shape of a submarine. Thus, as New Englanders love to do – the grinder was abbreviated to the ‘sub’ – Leaving these two sandwiches to be, well, one of the same, really.

The Hero

Then there is the hero. A hero sandwich is commonly found in New York City and other parts of the Northeast. Hero sandwiches are made with a long roll similar to a baguette, but wider and flatter. The roll is typically filled with meat, cheese, and vegetables, and it is often dressed with a tangy vinaigrette or mayonnaise-based sauce. Hero sandwiches are known for their large size and bold flavors, and they are often served as a meal unto themselves.

A Sub Sandwich

A sub sandwich is a type of sandwich that is popular throughout the United States. Like a grinder, a sub sandwich is made with a long roll that is filled with meat, cheese, and vegetables. However, sub sandwiches are typically made with a softer, untoasted roll – and there is the biggest difference between the sub and the grinder!

Sub sandwiches can be found in many different variations, including Italian subs, meatball subs, and turkey subs.

The Breakdown

The main difference between these sandwiches lies in the type of roll used and variations in ingredients and preparation. Grinders are typically made with a toasted roll and are popular in New England. Hero sandwiches are made with a wide, flat roll and are popular in the Northeast areas closer to New York. Finally, sub sandwiches are made with a soft roll and are popular throughout the United States.
